What are the common reasons for failing a COF test in NZ?

Common reasons vehicles fail a COF include:

• Brake problems: worn linings or pads, poor brake balance or inefficient braking performance
• Tyre issues: worn tread, damage or incorrect tyres
• Lights and electrical faults: blown bulbs, damaged lenses or faulty wiring
• Steering and suspension wear: worn components, play or damaged parts
• Structural issues: corrosion, cracks or damage to the chassis, body or towing connections
• Safety items: faulty seatbelts, mirrors, windscreen damage or wipers that do not work

A pre-check before your COF can pick up many of these early. If your vehicle does fail, a COF recheck is available for $68 + GST once the issues are fixed.

Can I book a COF test online for my truck?

Yes, you can book your COF online on our Contact Us page. Enter your truck's details and axle count, and our team will confirm your booking. You can also call us on 09 238 0138.

What is a certificate of fitness (COF) for vehicles?

A Certificate of Fitness (COF) is a regular inspection that confirms a vehicle is safe to be on New Zealand roads. COFs apply to heavy vehicles such as trucks and trailers, along with certain other vehicle types. The inspection checks safety-critical items such as brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights and structure against NZTA requirements. Staying current on your COF keeps your drivers safe and your fleet compliant.

How much does a COF cost?

COF fees at The Workshop 1924 depend on the vehicle type and the number of axles. In 2026, a COF costs from $184 + GST for a 1 axle trailer, $255 + GST for a 2 axle truck and up to $349 + GST for a 5 axle truck. A COF recheck is $68 + GST. Download the full 2026 COF Lane Pricing Guide.
